Chips Happen at Edges and Cutouts
The vulnerable geometry is anywhere the stone has an exposed arris: the front edge, the corner of a sink cutout, and the outer corner of an island. A dropped pan does it, and so does a cupboard door swung hard against a corner. The interior field of a worktop is almost never damaged in normal use.
Colour Matched Resin Is the Standard Fix
A repair specialist cleans the void, fills it with a pigmented resin blended against the surrounding stone, and cures and polishes it back flush. On a busy patterned granite the result is genuinely hard to find. On a uniform dark stone it is harder to hide, because there is no pattern to break up the eye.
Small Chips Are a Do It Yourself Job
Kits exist and work reasonably on minor damage in a low visibility position. The two things amateurs get wrong are overfilling, which leaves a proud lump that has to be ground back, and rushing the colour match by mixing under artificial light. Mix in daylight and build up in thin layers.
Stabilise Before It Spreads
An unfilled chip at an edge is a stress raiser and it will catch on things. Filling it, even temporarily, stops the progressive loss that turns a two millimetre nick into a visible bite over a year. This is the argument for dealing with it promptly rather than living with it.
When It Is Not a Chip
A line running across the stone rather than a void taken out of an edge is a different problem. Cracks are repairable cosmetically but the cause has to be found first, because a crack from an unsupported span will simply reopen. Filling a crack without addressing the support underneath it is decoration.
Prevention Where It Is Cheap
A very slight radius rather than a sharp arris on exposed corners, specified at fabrication, removes most of the exposure at no cost. On an existing top a corner can be eased in place by a repair specialist. Both are far cheaper than the repairs they prevent, and neither changes the look of the kitchen.
